Detailed description
Ganden Songzanlin Temple, also known as Guihua Temple, is not only the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province, but also the center of the Gelugpa Yellow Sect in Sichuan and Yunnan, holding a pivotal position in the entire Tibetan-related region. Because it resembles the Potala Palace in Tibet from afar, it is known as the "Little Potala Palace."
The name Ganden Songzanlin carries profound Buddhist meaning. Legend has it that heaven is divided into "six heavens," the fourth of which is called the Tusita Heaven. Through the power of Maitreya Buddha (Qianba Fo), it became majestic, sacred, and beautiful, known as the "Pure Land of Maitreya." "Ganden" refers to this "Tusita Heaven" (also known as the Heaven of Bliss or Maitreya Palace). In 1410 AD, Ganden Monastery was built in Lhasa, with Tsongkhapa presiding over the grand opening ceremony. Thus, the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism took Ganden Monastery as its main temple (place of practice). Songzanlin's prefix "Ganden" signifies, firstly, the beautiful and picturesque Tusita Heaven that people yearn for, and secondly, its lineage with the Ganden Monastery founded by the Gelugpa patriarch Tsongkhapa.
In Buddhism, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are called the "Three Jewels," scriptures, vinaya, and treatises are called the "Three Pitakas," the world is called the "Three Realms," and Buddha statues are divided into the "Three Buddhas of the Three Times." Undoubtedly, the number "three" holds profound meaning in Buddhism. The "Songzan" in "Songzanlin" refers to three places of play, the three levels of Taisha, Mengli, and Lou Su forming the Three Heavens, namely the Thirty-Three Heavens. "Song" also implies the meaning of three, according to the Fifth Dalai Lama, representing the cultivation of sila, samadhi, and prajna (morality, concentration, and wisdom), freeing oneself from the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion, a place where monks gather. "Lin" means "temple," a place where blessings are bestowed upon beings in the six realms.
